Wish you could do it anywhere, anytime? Well.. if you own an Android mobile device, you’re in luck.

There is an application called Robotic Guitarist which lets you play a 6-string on your mobile (hurray for Android). Needles to say that this means you can play anywhere; you can even plug it into an amp or a program such as GuitarRig (I’ve tried and it actually sounds somewhat decent).

Of course it doesn’t have all the nuances of a real guitar. Also it lacks a neck (otherwise it would never fit into your pocket). Changing chords is done by pressing one of six buttons on the side that correspond with a certain predefined chord. So if your epic solo has more than six chords, you are out of luck.

Then again, this application isn’t really meant for that kind of work in the first place. It does come with 3 build in instruments you can choose from and also features a guitar tuner and metronome… utterly convenient!

So it’s great for trying out some new melodies, but face it: rocking out on stage on your phone would look pathetic… ..or truely epic and utterly cool in a geeky kind of way!

Got back from Seattle and found an invite to test Propellerhead’s new software Record (video intro after the break). Seems like this will replace cubase for me as it does exactly what I use cubase for at the moment, except without all the rewiring issues and all that jazz.

It’s no secret we use Reason, but integrating and editing recorded instruments (percussion, guitar, didgeridoo, etc.) was always an issue. Not no more or so it seems. We’ll upload something once we’re done toying with it!

NO MORE REWIRE!!!! *does a happy dance*

Remember Wolfram? No? Don’t feel bad about it. These people aren’t famed for their music but rather for their Mathematica software. Now they’ve come up with something pretty neat though, proving that music is indeed math.

Wolfram Tones generates music and pretty pictures (like the one above) from a bunch of algorithms also found in Mathematica or as they put it themselves:

WolframTones works by taking simple programs from Wolfram’s computational universe, and using music theory and Mathematica algorithms to render them as music. Each program in effect defines a virtual world, with its own special story–and WolframTones captures it as a musical composition.

It’s all original music–fresh from “mining” Wolfram’s computational universe. Sometimes it’s reminiscent of familiar musical styles; sometimes it’s like nothing ever heard before. It’s a taste of what it’s like to explore the computational universe–and a hint of what’s to come…

So basicly you set tempo, tonality and select an algorithm as well as a bunch of other parameters and see what comes out. You can play back “your” composition and change the instruments or parts played. But that’s not the really fun part. The really fun part is the fact that you can have Tones mail you your generated thingy in MIDI format. And MIDI we have a 1001 uses for…

So head on over to check it out.
